ABSTRACT The flaxseed is little explored under Brazilian cultivation conditions, generating a gap in information about the appropriate management of the crop, in the country. Hence, the objective was to find the appropriate dose of nitrogen for the development of the variables: technical length, yield length, main stem diameter, number of grains per pod, plant grain yield, and plant dry mass of two flaxseed varieties, brown and golden, in places with subtropical and tropical climate in Brazil. The treatments consisted of a two-factor 2 x 6 experiment, consisting of two flax varieties (brown and golden) and six nitrogen doses (0; 30; 60; 90; 120 and 150 kg ha-1), in randomized blocks with four repetitions and three different environments: Santa Maria and Frederico Westphalen, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, and Viçosa, in the state of Minas Gerais. The brown variety obtained greater technical and yield length compared to the golden variety, on the other hand, the golden variety showed a higher number of grains per capsule and higher plant grain yield compared to the brown variety, in the three environments. The plant dry mass increased linearly and proportionally to the increase in nitrogen doses in Santa Maria and Frederico Westphalen environments. Therefore, flaxseed responds differently to nitrogen supplementation according to the cultivation environment, showing wide variability. The different doses of nitrogen influenced the variables analyzed and the varieties of flaxseed differently, depending on the environment.

Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic diversity of the wheat germplasm using high-density genotyping with SNP markers. A set of 211 wheat varieties genotyped with 35,142 SNP markers were used in the experiment. Genetic distances ranged from 0.013 to 0.471, with the highest frequency of distances varying between 0.31 and 0.40. In the cluster analysis by the UPGMA method, 81% of the varieties were clustered in three groups. Genetic variability in the Brazilian wheat germplasm has remained constant for over 70 years. Mean genetic distances among the varieties developed in each decade ranged from 0.33 to 0.34. A trend of genetic distance between genotypes from different eras has been observed over time as a result of breeding. Results described in this study can help Brazilian wheat breeders to manage more adequately genetic variability in the Brazilian wheat germplasm.

O potencial de rendimento de grãos em trigo varia, principalmente, em função da temperatura, radiação solar e do quociente fototermal. O objetivo foi estudar a variabilidade temporal e espacial do quociente fototermal (QF) e o risco de geadas visando identificar épocas de semeadura para a cultura do trigo que propicie o maior rendimento de grãos no estado do Paraná, Brasil. Os resultados demonstraram que há maior variabilidade do QF no espaço em relação ao tempo. A época de semeadura afeta as condições de crescimento da cultura, podendo incrementar o rendimento de grãos. Entretanto, o QF e o risco de geadas variam conforme a região de VCU. As regiões de VCU 1 e 2 apresentaram a maior variabilidade temporal do QF. A variação temporal para a região de VCU 1 ficou entre 1,5 a 2,0 MJ m-2 dia ºC (VCU 1), 1,1 a 1,5 MJ m-2 dia ºC (VCU 2) e 1,0 a 1,2 MJ m-2 dia ºC. Em todas regiões de VCU, semeaduras realizadas no mês de junho proporcionam o maior valor de QF. Entretanto, há elevado risco de geadas na região de VCU 1 quando a semeadura ocorre em junho. Assim, a época de semeadura pode ser uma importante ferramenta no manejo para alto rendimento de grãos em trigo.

The potential yield of wheat is mainly determined by temperature, solar radiation and the photothermal quotient. The objective of this study was to determine the temporal and spatial variability of the photothermal quotient and the frost risk to identify suitable sowing dates for wheat in Parana State, Brazil. The results showed that the photothermal quotient has greater spatial variability than temporal variability. The sowing date affects crop conditions that can in turn affect yield. However, the photothermal quotient and frost risk fluctuate differently in different Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) regions. The regions VCU 1 and VCU 2 showed greater temporal variability of the photothermal quotient. The photothermal quotient ranged from 1.5 to 2.0 MJ m-2 day ºC in VCU 1, from 1.1 to 1.5 MJ m-2 day ºC in VCU 2 and from 1.0 to 1.2 MJ m-2 day ºC in VCU 3. Sowing performed in June provided the greatest photothermal quotient in all VCU regions. However, June sowing increased the frost risk in VCU 1. Thus, the sowing date can be used as a management tool for the attainment of higher yield in wheat.

Este estudo teve por objetivo determinar o número ótimo de ensaios necessários à predição da produtividade de grãos de genótipos de trigo, em diferentes regiões de Valor de Cultivo e Uso (VCU), com vistas à seleção e recomendação de cultivares. Foram usados os dados de produtividade de grãos de 285 ensaios de competição, avaliados em 31 locais, nas safras agrícolas de 2007 a 2011, nas regiões de VCU 1, 2, 3 e 4. Existem diferenças entre as regiões de VCU quanto ao coeficiente de repetibilidade e ao número de ensaios necessários para uma precisão pré-estabelecida. Constatou-se a necessidade de aumentar o número de ensaios nas regiões de VCU 2 e 4 e reduzir o número de ensaios nas regiões de VCU 1 e 3. Nas regiões de VCU 1, 2, 3 e 4, para um nível de precisão de 80%, são necessários 8, 14, 10 e 12 ensaios, respectivamente.

The objective of this study was to determine the optimal number of tests required to predict the performance of grain yield of wheat genotypes in different regions of Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU), with a view to selecting and recommending cultivars. Grain yield data from 285 field trials at 31 locations in the VCU Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 in 2007-2011 were used. There are differences among VCU regions with reference to the repeatability coefficient and the number of tests required for a predetermined accuracy. It was noted the need to raise the number of tests VCU regions 2 and 4 and reduce the number of trials in the regions of VCU 1 and 3. In regions VCU 1, 2, 3 and 4, to a level of 80% accuracy, are required 8, 14, 10 and 12 tests, respectively.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar se o uso do método de Papadakis melhora os pressupostos do modelo e a precisão experimental da produtividade de grãos de em ensaios de competição de linhagens de trigo, em diferentes regiões de Valor de Cultivo e Uso (VCU). Foram usados os resultados da produtividade de grãos de 572 ensaios de competição, avaliados em 31 locais, nas regiões de VCU 1, 2, 3, e 4, nas safras agrícolas de 2007 a 2011. O método de Papadakis melhorou os índices das medidas de precisão experimental e reduziu o número de repetições necessário para a predição do rendimento de grãos de genótipos de trigo. Existe diferença entre as regiões de adaptação de trigo quanto à eficiência do método de Papadakis, a magnitude do coeficiente de ajustamento das médias de genótipos, o ganho na acurácia seletiva e a produtividade de grãos.

The aim of this study was to verify whether using the Papadakis method improves model assumptions and experimental accuracy in field trials used to determine grain yield for wheat lineages indifferent Value for Cultivation and Use (VCU) regions. Grain yield data from 572 field trials at 31 locations in the VCU Regions 1, 2, 3 and 4 in 2007-2011 were used. Each trial was run with and without the use of the Papadakis method. The Papadakis method improved the indices of experimental precision measures and reduced the number of experimental repetitions required to predict grain yield performance among the wheat genotypes. There were differences among the wheat adaptation regions in terms of the efficiency of the Papadakis method, the adjustment coefficient of the genotype averages and the increases in the selective accuracy of grain yield.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adequação de estatísticas de precisão experimental em conjuntos de ensaios de competição de genótipos de trigo (Triticum aestivum), realizados em regiões homogêneas de adaptação. As estatísticas herdabilidade, coeficiente de determinação, valor do teste F para genótipo, índice de diferenciação de Fasoulas, acurácia seletiva e coeficiente de repetibilidade foram calculadas a partir de resultados de produtividade de grãos de trigo de 572 ensaios de competição com 25 genótipos, em quatro regiões homogêneas de adaptação, nas safras de 2007 a 2011. Foram estimadas as correlações lineares entre as estatísticas e realizada a análise de trilha. As estatísticas foram agrupadas pelo método hierárquico de Ward. As médias das estatísticas de cada região de adaptação foram comparadas pelo teste t "bootstrap". As estatísticas acurácia seletiva, coeficiente de determinação, coeficiente de herdabilidade e coeficiente de repetibilidade apresentam relação algébrica e são adequadas para avaliar a precisão experimental de ensaios de competição de trigo em diferentes regiões de adaptação. As regiões utilizadas para avaliação do valor de cultivo e uso do trigo diferem quanto à acurácia seletiva e ao coeficiente de repetibilidade.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the adequacy of measures of the experimental precision degree in trial sets of genotype competition in wheat (Triticum aestivum), carried out in homogeneous adaptation regions. The statistics heritability, coefficient of determination, F-test value for genotype, Fasoulas differentiation index, selective accuracy, and repeatability coefficient were calculated from results of wheat grain yield obtained in 572 competition trials with 25 genotypes, in four homogeneous adaptation regions in the crop years from 2007 to 2011. Linear correlations among the statistics were estimated and path analysis was performed. Statistics were grouped using Ward's hierarchical method. Statistical means from each adaptation region were compared by the t bootstrap test. The statistics selective accuracy, coefficient of determination, coefficient of heritability, and repeatability coefficient are algebraically related and are suitable to evaluate the experimental accuracy of wheat competition trials in different adaptation regions. The regions used for the evaluation of values for cultivation and use of wheat differ in selective accuracy and repeatability coefficient.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi identificar as melhores épocas de semeadura e avaliar a adaptabilidade e a estabilidade de cultivares de trigo, em duas regiões tritícolas do Paraná. Avaliou-se a produtividade de grãos de sete cultivares, em Guarapuava, e de nove, em Palotina, em quatro épocas de semeadura, em 2006, 2007 e 2008. Utilizou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso, com quatro repetições em Guarapuava, e três em Palotina. Foram utilizadas a metodologia REML/BLUP e a dos efeitos principais dos genótipos e da interação genótipo x ambiente (GGE biplot) para a avaliação da adaptabilidade e da estabilidade das cultivares, e o métodoAMMI para a identificação das melhores épocas de semeadura. Semeaduras em julho, em Guarapuava, e em abril, em Palotina, maximizam a produtividade de grãos. As cultivares Safira, em Guarapuava, e CD 113, em Palotina, são estáveis, amplamente adaptadas e apresentam alta produtividade de grãos.

The objective of this work was to identify the best sowing dates and to evaluate the adaptability and stability of wheat cultivars in two wheat growing regions of the state of Paraná, Brazil. Seven cultivars were evaluated at Guarapuava and nine at Palotina as to grain yield, at four sowing seasons, in 2006, 2007 and 2008. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, with four and three replicates, for Guarapuava and Palotina, respectively. The methodologies REML/BLUP and genotype main effect and genotype x environment interaction (GGE biplot) were used for adaptability and stability analysis, and the AMMI model was used to identify the best sowing dates. Sowing in July, at Guarapuava, and in April, at Palotina, maximized grain yield. The cultivars Safira, at Guarapuava, and CD 113, at Palotina, are stable, highly adapted and show high grain yield.

Foi avaliada a capacidade combinatória de oito cultivares de trigo, por meio de um esquema dialélico analisado segundo o modelo quatro da metodologia de Griffing. Paralelamente, foi realizada uma análise de dissimilaridade com marcadores SSR, a partir de estimativas de distância genética baseadas em pedigree. Oito características foram avaliadas num experimento delineado em blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições. O agrupamento das cultivares a partir das distâncias genéticas foi efetuado com os métodos UPGMA e Tocher. Ficou evidenciada a variabilidade entre os genótipos de trigo. As cultivares 'CD 108', 'CD 0542' e 'CD 104' apresentaram grande capacidade geral de combinação para vários caracteres. Os maiores valores de capacidade específica de combinação foram detectados nos híbridos mais heterozigotos, formados pelo cruzamento de parentais integrantes de grupos diferentes. Os agrupamentos indicados pelo pedigree não coincidiram com os indicados a partir dos marcadores moleculares. As distâncias dos marcadores SSR provavelmente refletem melhor as relações entre as cultivares de trigo do que as distâncias medidas com base na genealogia. A falta de associação entre os padrões de agrupamento foi provavelmente devida às propriedades intrínsecas de cada forma de estimação das distâncias genéticas, as quais podem modificar a interpretação e a distribuição da variabilidade genética entre os genótipos avaliados.

The combining ability of eight wheat varieties was evaluated according to the fourth model of the Griffing's diallelic methodology. Studies on genetic dissimilarity based on microsatellite markers and genetic distance among genotypes from pedigree data were also performed. The experiment was carried out in a randomized block design with two replications. Eight traits were evaluated in the diallel. Genotypes were grouped according to the UPGMA and Tocher methods. Genetic variability among genotypes was evident. Varieties 'CD 108', 'CD 0542' and 'CD 104' were those who showed high values for general combining ability in several traits. Since the effects of specific combining ability were more important in those particularly heterozygous combinations obtained from varieties allocated in different clusters, field and molecular results coincided in a certain way. There was no a good coincidence between the dendrogram based on parentage coefficient and the one based on microssatellite markers. The very small association between standards of grouping was probably related to the intrinsic properties of each way of estimating the genetic distance, which can modify the interpretation and the distribution of the genetic variability in the evaluated genotypes.

O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar a adaptabilidade e estabilidade para a produção de grãos de 17 cultivares de trigo (Triticum aestivum L.) no Estado do Paraná, utilizando quatro métodos. Os experimentos foram realizados em 2007, em diferentes locais do Paraná, com delineamento blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições. A metodologia de Wricke (1965) indica cultivares estáveis, independentemente do rendimento médio. Igualmente eficiente na avaliação da estabilidade e indicação de cultivares estáveis e, também adaptadas a ambientes favoráveis e desfavoráveis foram as metodologias de Eberhart e Russell (1966) e Cruz et al. (1989). A metodologia de Lin e Binns (1988), de fácil interpretação, foi eficiente em recomendar cultivares de alto rendimento e boa estabilidade, e os materiais mais responsivos, o menor Pi e a alta correlação negativa de Spearman, entre o rendimento de grãos. Concluiu-se que a metodologia de Lin e Binns é bastante discriminante e, quando associada ao Wi, oferece maior segurança na recomendação de cultivares com maior estabilidade.

This investigation had the objective to evaluate grain yield adaptability and stability of 17 wheat cultivars (Triticum aestivum L.) for Paraná State, Brazil, occording to four different methods. The experiments were carried out in 2007, at different locations of Paraná, in complete randomized blocks experimental design, with 4 replicates. The Wricke (1965) methodology indicates stable cultivars, independently of average yield. Eberhart and Russell (1966) and Cruz et al. (1989) methodologies were equally efficient to evaluate stability and indicate cultivars that are stable and also adapted to favorable and unfavorable environments. Lin and Binns (1988) methodology showed to be of easy interpretation and was efficient to indicate cultivars of high yield and with good stability, where more responsive materials showed a lesser Pi, and high negative correlation of Spearman between grain yields. It was concluded that LIN and BINNS methodology is very specific and when associated to Wi offers more assurance in recommending cultivars for high stability.

A aptidão tecnológica representa uma oportunidade de agregar valor de mercado ao trigo, principalmente em face do mercado internacional e do setor industrial, o qual busca diferencial de qualidade aos seus produtos. Os fatores genéticos, meteorológicos e de manejo são determinantes para a obtenção da qualidade desejada. Nesse sentido, a adequada escolha da cultivar, o conhecimento das limitações climáticas da região de cultivo e da fertilidade do solo e a execução dos tratos culturais recomendados pela pesquisa podem contribuir substancialmente para a obtenção das características físicas, químicas e biológicas que conferem qualidade à farinha e aos produtos derivados de farinha, conforme abordado nesta revisão.

Technological performance represents an opportunity to add market value to wheat, especially considering international market and industrial sector which seek to achieve distinctive quality of their products. Genetic, metereological, and management factors are crucial to obtain the desired quality. With respect to the selection of an adequate cultivar, knowledge about the climatic limitations of the wheat-growing region and soil fertility, and accomplishing the management practices recommended by research can substantially contribute toward obtaining the physical, chemical, and biological characteristics that lend quality to flour and flour-based products, as discussed in this review.

Wheat (Triticum aestivum) is one of the most important food staples in the south of Brazil. Understanding genetic variability among the assortment of Brazilian wheat is important for breeding. The aim of this work was to molecularly characterize the thirty-six wheat cultivars recommended for various regions of Brazil, and to assess mutual genetic distances, through the use of microsatellite markers. Twenty three polymorphic microsatellite markers (PMM) delineated all 36 of the samples, revealing a total of 74 simple sequence repeat (SSR) alleles, i.e. an average of 3.2 alleles per locus. Polymorphic information content (PIC value) calculated to assess the informativeness of each marker ranged from 0.20 to 0.79, with a mean of 0.49. Genetic distances among the 36 cultivars ranged from 0.10 (between cultivars Ocepar 18 and BRS 207) to 0.88 (between cultivars CD 101 and Fudancep 46), the mean distance being 0.48. Twelve groups were obtained by using the unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic means analysis (UPGMA), and thirteen through the Tocher method. Both methods produced similar clusters, with one to thirteen cultivars per group. The results indicate that these tools may be used to protect intellectual property and for breeding and selection programs.

O uso de diferentes medidas de dissimilaridade genética auxilia na definição de estratégias de melhoramento e no direcionamento de cruzamentos artificiais. O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a dissimilaridade genética entre sete genótipos de aveia branca (Avena sativa L.) através de marcadores moleculares AFLP (dg) e caracteres agronômicos (dm). Os resultados foram constatados em dois experimentos desenvolvidos no município de Capão do Leão (RS), Brasil, em 2000. O coeficiente de correlação encontrado (r=0.33) indicou baixa correspondência entre as estimativas de dg e dm. Os genótipos com a mesma genealogia (UPF 16 e UPF 17), com valor de bootstraping de 82,7%, formaram o grupo mais consistente (dg) e o agrupamento mais similar em ambas as técnicas (dg e dm); entretanto, agruparam-se genótipos de genealogia similar em diferentes grupos. Ambas as estimativas de dissimilaridade, quando utilizadas conjuntamente, proporcionam maior suporte para a escolha de genitores dissimilares, com grande probabilidade de desenvolvimento de populações-base promissoras.

The use of different genetic dissimilarity indicators can help in both the selection of crop improvement strategies and as artificial crosses. The objectives of this work were to estimate the genetic dissimilarity among seven oat genotypes (Avena sativa L.) through molecular (dg) and morphological (dm) markers. Data were obtained from two experiments carried out in Capão do Leão County, RS, Brazil, in 2000. The estimated correlation coefficient (r = 0.33) indicated a low association between dg and dm estimates. The genotypes with similar pedigrees (UPF 16 and UPF 17), with a bootstrapping value of 82.7%, performed the most consistent group (dg) and clustered more closely in both techniques (dg and dm). However, genotypes with similar pedigree clustered in distant groups. Both dissimilarity estimates need to be used in order to obtain a more reliable choice of dissimilar parents, with higher probability of developing promising base populations.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estimar a utilização do método de retrocruzamento entre genitores elite para obtenção de maior probabilidade de desenvolver progênies superiores de aveia que propiciem elevado êxito na seleção. Foram coletados dados dos caracteres: número de panículas por planta e rendimento de grãos da planta individual em kg ha-1. Foram utilizados cinco genótipos de aveia (UPF 16, UPF 18, UFRGS 7, UFRGS 17 e URPel 95/015), cruzados de forma dialélica. Através de retrocruzamentos, foram desenvolvidas as populações RC1P1, RC1P2, RC1P1F2, RC1P2F2, RC2P1 e RC2P2, e, a partir dos genitores, foram produzidas as gerações F1 e F3. Os híbridos F1, as populações F3 e os retrocruzamentos foram avaliados a campo no ano agrícola de 2003. A superioridade dos retrocruzamentos, em relação à população F3, foi dependente do cruzamento. Os genitores UPF 16, UFRGS 7 e UFRGS 17 produziram progênies progressivamente melhores quando as constituições dos mesmos foram incrementadas na população. Estes resultados foram evidenciados em 75% dos cruzamentos, nos quais os referidos genótipos participaram. Por outro lado, UPF 18 e URPEL 95/015 evidenciaram genes menos favoráveis para elevar o potencial genético do rendimento de grãos nas combinações testadas, com tendência a reduzir o desempenho das progênies com o aumento de suas participações nas hibridações.

The objective of this work was to develop the use of backcrosses among elite parental lines and to identify the parents with higher probability of developing superior progenies when used in crossing blocks. The following traits were analyzed: number of panicles per plant and plant grain yield in kg. ha-1. Five oat genotypes (UPF 16, UPF 18, UFRGS 7, UFRGS 17 and URPel 95/015) were crossed on a diallel design not considering reciprocal crosses. F1 populations were obtained from the cross of parental lines. These populations were either backcrossed to obtain the populations BC1P1, BC1P2, BC1P1F2, BC1P2F2, BC2P1 and BC2P2, or selfed to obtain F2 and F3 generations. The F1 hybrids, the F3 populations and the backcrosses were field evaluated during a 2003 winter season. A cross dependent superiority was observed for backcrosses, when compared to the F3 population. An improvement in progeny superiority was observed when the background was increased for the genotypes UPF 16, UFRGS 7 and UFRGS 17. These results were observed in 75% of the crosses, in which those genotypes were present as parental lines UPF 18 and URPEL 95/015 presented less favorable genes to increase grain yield, showing a tendency to reduce the performance of progenies when of their genetic background was increased in the tested combinations.

Em aveia (Avena sativa L.), a utilização de técnicas que minimizem os efeitos de ambiente na expressão do fenótipo e que facilitem a identificação de genótipos de superior rendimento de grãos, baixa estatura e tolerantes ao alumínio tóxico são aspectos de fundamental importância para o desenvolvimento de cultivares mais promissores e com adaptabilidade a áreas consideradas marginais. Desta forma, genótipos selecionados pelo método colméia de condução de populações segregantes, em três diferentes cruzamentos, foram submetidos a testes simultâneos para tolerância ao alumínio tóxico (Al+3) e insensibilidade ao ácido giberélico (AG3), objetivando a identificação de constituições genéticas superiores. A técnica utilizada possibilitou a seleção de plantas de alto potencial produtivo, menor estatura (insensíveis ao AG3) e mais tolerantes ao Al+3, podendo ser aplicada com sucesso em programas de melhoramento genético com a cultura da aveia hexaplóide cultivada.

In oat (Avena sativa L.) techniques that minimize environmental effects on the expression of phenotype and facilitate the identification of high yielding genotypes are useful. Short stature and tolerance to toxic aluminum are important for the development of cultivars with adaptability to marginal areas. Thus, genotypes selected by the honeycomb method, in three different crosses, were subjected to simultaneous tests for aluminum tolerance (Al+3) and insensibility to gibberelic acid (AG3), aiming the identification of superior genotypes. This technique enabled the selection of high yielding, short stature and Al+3 tolerant genotypes and could be applied in plant breeding programs involving cultivated hexaploid oat.

A demanda por alimentos com maior qualidade e valor nutritivo propiciou à aveia se destacar como uma importante cultura para alimentação humana e animal. Assim, caracteres que conferem a qualidade do grão como o percentual de cariopse, passaram a receber maior atenção nos programas de melhoramento. Deste modo, o objetivo do presente trabalho foi estimar a herança genética do caráter percentual de cariopse, um dos principais caracteres responsável pela qualidade do grão. O experimento foi conduzido nos anos de 1999 e 2000, na Universidade Federal de Pelotas. Foram utilizados quatro cultivares para realizar os cruzamentos e obter a geração F1. Uma nova semeadura em telado (janeiro/2000) foi realizada com os genitores e a F1 para produzir a 1ª geração de retrocruzamentos. As sementes produzidas por autofecundação de plantas F1, originaram a geração F2. Os genitores (P1 e P2) e as gerações F1, F2, RC1F1 e RC2F1, foram semeadas separadamente a campo em junho/2000. As seis gerações obtidas foram conduzidas a campo e, em cada geração, uma amostra de 20 sementes de cada panícula foi selecionada, pesada e descascada para determinar o percentual de cariopse. Os cruzamentos entre CTC 5 × OR 2 e UPF 7 × UFRGS 19 evidenciaram as maiores variâncias fenotípicas e genéticas propiciando estimar valores altos de herdabilidade nestes cruzamentos. Os resultados indicaram que a aditividade é a de maior participação no controle do caráter. A observação de segregação transgressiva confirma a idéia de diferentes genes com a manifestação de 1 a 3 genes conforme os cruzamentos. Estes resultados indicam que a seleção para indivíduos superiores poderá ter sucesso mesmo ocorrendo em gerações altamente segregantes.

The demand for foods with better quality and nutritional value, propitiated to the oats to be an important culture for human and animal feeding. Traits that check the quality of the grain, as the percentage of caryopsis, has been receiving larger attention in the oat breeding programs. The objective of the present work was to determine the inheritance of number of genes, gene action and the heritability of the trait percentage of caryopsis. The experiment was made in the years of 1999 and 2000 in the Federal University of Pelotas - UFPel - Brazil. Four cultivar were used to do the crossings and to obtain the generation F1. A new sowing in greenhouse (january/2000) was done with the parents and F1 to produce the first backcrosses generation. The seeds produced by self-polinization of plants F1, originated the generation F2. The parents (P1 and P2) and the generations F1, F2, BC1F1 and BC2F1, were sowed separately in the field in june/2000. The six generations obtained were driven and in each generation, a sample of 20 seeds of each panicle was selected, weighted and husked to determine the percentage of caryopsis. The crosses CTC 5 × OR 2 and UPF 7 × UFRGS 19 evidenced the largest phenotypic and genetics variances propitiating high values of heritability in these crossings. The results indicated that the aditive is the most important in the control of the trait. The observation of transgressive segregation confirms the idea of different genes with the manifestation of 1 to 3 genes according to the crosses. These results indicate that the selection for superior individuals can be done in early generations.
